I love the idea as it’d have saved me and others time going between the Bronx and Queens, where transit connections are slow and too few.ī. The MTA declined to comment on the legislation.Ī. “The main point behind getting this feasibility study done is to ensure what we think is doable is something that the MTA can accomplish,” Mehta says. Walker’s bill would require the MTA to study the feasibility of the project from a number of perspectives, including “the feasibility of co-mingling public transit and freight” and whether such a line could be integrated with the area’s existing transit and fare systems. The route proposed for The Triboro is along a rail right-of-way owned by three different entities: Amtrak, LIRR and freight operator CSX. ” With the transit crisis…there’s been a shift in wanting to do transit projects that give people a little more bang for their buck.” “There’s not as much infrastructure that would need to be built to make it a feasible line,” says Maulin Mehta, a senior associate of state programs and advocacy for the RPA. The route would also make use of existing rail infrastructure, making it less expensive to build out, according to the organization, which estimates The Triboro would cost $1 billion to $2 billion to construct (by comparison, the MTA’s East Side Access project to extend the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal surpassed the $11 billion price mark last year, according to reports). The Triboro could shorten commutes for some riders by more than 30 minutes, according to the RPA. Currently, riders traveling between The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn via the subway often have to pass through Manhattan, or can opt to take often slow-moving MTA buses. The route would connect to 17 subway lines and four commuter rail lines, according to the RPA’s plans.Ĭity planners have long sought ways to improve public transit connections between the outer boroughs, including Mayor de Blasio’s proposed Brooklyn-Queens Connector streetcar, which would run along the waterfront. Under the RPA’s plan, the Triboro would be built along existing rail lines, with 22 stations running from Co-op City into the South Bronx, connecting to Queens neighborhoods like Astoria and Jackson Heights before heading into Brooklyn, where it would run through East New York, Flatbush and Bensonhurst, terminating in Bay Ridge. The RPA proposed The Triboro to create a north-south connection for commuters in the outer boroughs, where nearly half of the city’s job growth has occurred over the last decade but where many neighborhoods remain underserved by the MTA’s Manhattan-centric subway network. “As our great state is about to receive an influx of transportation dollars from policy initiatives like congestion pricing, this study may prove to be a worthwhile plan to give hardworking families in outer boroughs the ability for their dollars to work for them.” “Residents in communities such as Brownsville or Co-op city have been plagued by two-fare zones and inaccessibility, however, when we have conversations regarding updating infrastructure and service lines, it always seems as if we are an after-thought,” Walker told City Limits in a statement.

The problem with the collection is that the vast majority of the arcade games included didn’t use a joystick and buttons as their original control scheme. The interface is easy to navigate, includes instructions, artwork, and a lot of control configurations for the touchscreen, and seems to faithfully emulate these games. This is ultimately a minor quibble, and I can’t imagine how much more the folks at Ion and ThinkGeek could have included in this unit without significantly increasing the price. In my mind, the only design flaw is the lack of a built in dock or a pass through hole for a docking/charging cable you will have to take the iPad out to charge it up. The glowing (but non functional) coin door is a nice touch, and the “retro” styling of the artwork is well implemented. The top board of the unit is built on a hinge that allows you to easily insert and take out the iPad, and it also doubles as a good light shield for the screen. The unit itself is fairly light, but hasn’t moved around or jostled during play on the variety of surfaces on which I’ve placed it. The buttons are a little close together for my liking, but having eight buttons in a small space is a nice feature and I never noticed any cramping or uncomfortableness (of course, I also haven’t played any games that require me to use all eight buttons). I would compare them favorably to the feel of the Dreamcast Agetec stick, which is a strong stick that just feels a little stiffer and springier than something like a Hori Real Arcade Pro (which I prefer). The most important hardware on the iCade – the buttons and the stick – feel pretty solid. When the iCade box arrived, it was relatively easy to unpack and setup (although I did accidentally crack one of the plastic screw holders by over-tightening), and after Bluetooth tethering my iPad to the unit (something that took less than a minute) and downloading the Atari’s Greatest Hits bundle (a $15 software package), I was ready to go. Perhaps my summer of arcade gaming could begin! After contacting them about doing a review, they were happy to send me a unit. Fortuitously, ThinkGeek announced the production of their iCade around the same time as I learned I would be receiving my iPad. In May I found out that my employer would be furnishing me with a new iPad 2, and like most gamers my thoughts quickly jumped to the question of “what games can I play on this?” I’d already had my fill of touch-based games on my smartphone, so I wondered what the iPad might be able to offer that was new. My first foray into arcade gaming at home was one that I wouldn’t have anticipated having while I was at PAX. I decided that maybe this summer it was time to actually take that leap. When visiting PAX East in March, I was spoiled by the setup in their ACAM game room and longed to have some kind of similar experience available to me at home. I have even used adapters to hook a few of them up to the PC to play with MAME on occasion, but sitting on the couch or sitting at a desk with an arcade stick on my lap just did not equal the thrill of standing at a cabinet and playing on actual arcade hardware. I have long owned some very nice arcade-style fightsticks by companies like Hori, Agetec, and MadCatz, and swear by all of them for playing shmups or fighters on consoles. This past summer I decided to take a leap that a lot of retro gaming enthusiasts ponder, but far too few ever follow through with: I decided to add some kind of dedicated arcade experience to my gaming setup. Summer of the DIY Arcade, Part 1: The iCade companies tend to be more fragmented in their web presence, with various company sectors locations creating their own sites with more independence from headquarters. companies generally eschewing top-down web presence-one main company site that links to corporate sub-sites built in the same fashion, all overseen by a small core group within the company a hierarchy Bowen Craggs calls "governance." U.S. firm, number 20 on the list, is Ford Motor Company. Its notable, says Bowen, that the top companies on the Index are European-the top ranked U.S. “They’ve got people in the offices in their headquarters whose job is just to make (the sites) better. Top sites this year, says David Bowen, have been around long enough to iron out their kinks. New sites tend to be buggy, which means they lose ground on Bowen Craggs’ ranking-as happened to that of Shell, which topped charts last year but fell to eighth place this year after some new changes. This cycle could be over anything from two years to 10 years.” He explains: “They way corporate websites are handles is they have a certain life, then they die, then they’re relaunched. Of the top sites in this year’s ranking, Bowen says each is at a stage of its life where it tends to be good. Lesser known internationally than competitors Shell and BP, its site’s focus is to shout out to the world that it exists and matters, and contributes to Italian cultural causes. The third place on the Index is held by Italian oil and energy concern, Eni. “It’s full of exciting design, exciting technology and that’s kind of what it’s there for.” It also provides extensive information on its core businesses – such as its somewhat controversial crop sciences sector – accessible easily through its global site. Germany-based Bayer – which took the second position on the Bowen Craggs Index – does a thorough job of using its website to communicate that it is an exciting place to work in order to attract quality personnel. “That’s why Nestlé has to put so much effort into this particular form of communication-it’s a way of defending its reputation.” “Nestlé uses its website, it uses social media, it makes its arguments and that’s really its main job – as a reputation management tool,” says Bowen. It also defends its public image, says Bowen Craggs cofounder David Bowen, after years of criticism for marketing its baby food formula to African markets. Topping the list this year is Switzerland-based food and beverage company, Nestlé, whose website, Bowen Craggs claims, is focused, thoroughly expressive of the international firm’s identity and mission, and communicates those elements with the public effectively. Pay close attention to the Oculus Link spec requirements and compatible graphics cards, however. If money (and space) is no object, then the Valve Index is certainly the way to go, offering as it does the most impressive experience on the market. Winner: Valve Index Oculus Quest 2 vs Valve Index: Verdictīoth headsets shine in different ways. You might not get those Oculus exclusives, but to be honest, that’s no huge loss. Specs are limited only by the hardware you’ve plugged it into, so theoretically, no VR game is out of reach (so long as your machine is powerful enough). The zero gravity multiplayer future sport title Echo VR is a fun, Oculus exclusive and free!Īs a headset dependent on external hardware, the Valve Index gives you access to the huge amount of PCVR games available. Another Star Wars title for example, Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, is (for now, at least) an Oculus exclusive. While many former exclusives have been ported to other formats since launch, such as the three-part Star Wars experience Vader Immortal, a small number remain. Winner: Oculus Quest 2 Oculus Quest 2 vs Valve Index: Exclusive gamesĪll Oculus Quest 2 games are downloaded from the Oculus store. You do at least get the critically-acclaimed Half Life: Alyx included… A package with everything you need – headset, controllers, and base stations – will set you back a wallet-burning $999/£919. The Valve Index offers a luxury experience for what is very much a luxury price. You get absolutely everything you need to get started in the box. The cheapest version is $299/£299, and the more expensive version (with 256GB storage rather than 128GB) is $399/£399. There’s no two ways about it: This is an easy win for the Oculus Quest 2. (Image credit: Oculus) Oculus Quest 2 vs Valve Index: Cost The end result is a luxury VR experience. In addition to that, the Index’s 12GB memory is double that of the Quest 2, and the use of base stations – while a pain to set up – results in excellent space and motion detection. The Index offers a best-in-class field of view (more important than resolution to many VR users) of 130 degrees against the Quest 2’s 89 degrees. After this, although both headsets are capable of displaying 120 Hz, Valve’s offering starts to pull away with little trouble. Surprisingly, the significantly cheaper Quest 2 offers a higher resolution per eye, at 1832 x 1920 per eye versus the Valve Index’s 1440 x 1600. Winner: Oculus Quest 2 Oculus Quest 2 vs Valve Index: Specs The motion tracking is very impressive, but you need to work for it. Also, as a room-scale headset, you need sufficient space in your play area in order to place physical base stations for the headset to ‘see’. It does nothing by itself, depending on a PC or laptop with the required software (and specs) to function. However, the Valve Index is the polar opposite of the Quest 2’s pick-up-and-play experience. The number of games and apps that support this is relatively small, but it’s an impressive innovation. The second indication is that the controllers, which at a brief glance seem similar to those of the Quest 2, can track the movement of individual fingers. There’s also a second dial that moves the lenses closer to or further from your eyes, the first indication that this is a luxury piece of kit. The Valve Index has a superior headset strap, with a dial to easily tighten or loosen it. |
